How to Extract CPIO and CPGZ Files on iPhone

Open .cpio and .cpgz archives in Fileso on iPhone, including a CPIO archive wrapped in gzip.

CPIO is an archive container used by some Unix and Apple workflows. A .cpgz file normally places a CPIO archive inside gzip compression. Fileso reads supported CPIO variants and unwraps a valid gzip layer before showing the inner entries.

Extract .cpio, .cpgz in Fileso

  1. Save the complete .cpio or .cpgz file in Fileso. A CPGZ file adds a gzip layer around CPIO.
  2. Tap the file and choose View to inspect a temporary extraction of the CPIO members.
  3. Choose Extract to keep the files beside the archive, or Extract to Folder for another destination.
  4. Check the extracted directory tree and open a representative file before deleting the source.

Use View to check whether you received the expected file tree, then extract to a separate folder. If the source is a system package, inspect names and sizes before copying individual resources out of their original directory structure.

If extraction fails

A .cpgz can also be produced when an archive utility repeatedly fails to open another file. If the result looks unrelated to what you expected, verify the source format rather than decompressing the same file in a loop. Damaged gzip or CPIO headers will stop extraction.

Common question

Is CPGZ the same as ZIP? No. CPGZ normally means gzip-compressed CPIO, while ZIP has its own container structure.
