VHD and VHDX are virtual disk containers used by Microsoft virtualization tools. Fileso reads supported standalone disk layouts, then inspects recognizable partitions and file systems inside. A virtual disk is not a simple compressed folder.
Extract .vhd, .vhdx in Fileso
- Copy the complete image to a local location Fileso can access and check that enough storage remains for the extracted files.
- Tap it and choose View to browse a temporary extraction. A large image may take time to prepare.
- Choose Extract to Folder when you need a lasting copy in a separate destination, then wait for the task to finish.
- Open a few resulting files and preserve the original image if you may need its full disk structure later.
Keep the complete image on local storage while browsing, because random access may be needed across the file. Use View to identify the volume before extracting; choose a separate destination with room for the files you select.
If extraction fails
Differencing disks that depend on a parent image are outside the current standalone reader. Encrypted or unsupported guest file systems may also show no extractable files. If you have only a child disk, request a merged or exported image.
Common question
Can Fileso boot a VHD or VHDX virtual machine? No. The app reads supported file systems for inspection and extraction; it is not a virtual machine.
