Device Status⁺ offers a Shortcuts action named Get Temperature Value. It returns the device’s current thermal state as text: Nominal, Fair, Serious, or Critical. This is a system classification, not a thermometer reading in °C or °F.
Build the shortcut
- Install and open Device Status⁺ once.
- Open Apple’s Shortcuts app and create a new shortcut.
- Search for Device Status⁺, then add Get Temperature Value.
- Add Show Result after it and pass in the result from the previous action. Run the shortcut to see the state.
You can add an If action to react to a serious or critical state. Check the exact returned text on your device before comparing strings, because the action localizes the description. An automation may run only under the triggers and confirmation rules allowed by iOS.
Interpret the result
- Nominal: The system is operating in its normal thermal range.
- Fair: Thermal conditions have increased, but the state is below serious.
- Serious: iOS may reduce performance to manage heat.
- Critical: The system reports its highest thermal pressure level.
The state is useful for deciding when to pause demanding work or move the phone out of direct sunlight. It cannot identify a failing battery, report a precise internal temperature, or replace a hardware diagnostic. If the action is missing, update and open Device Status⁺, then reopen Shortcuts.
