NeoServer Server Settings: Connection, Mosh, Bastion, Proxy and Failover

Every option on NeoServer's Add/Edit Server form: host and authentication, SSH and Mosh terminals, agent forwarding, Wake-on-LAN, metrics and container controls, bastion hosts, SOCKS5 proxies, failover targets and startup scripts.

Adding a server and editing one use the same form: tap + on the Servers page to create, or tap an existing server to edit. The top of the form offers Auto Discover, which scans the local network for machines with an SSH port open and lists them for one-tap import.

Connection basics

  • Name is the label shown everywhere in the app. Leave it empty to show the host instead.
  • Host takes an IP address or domain; Port defaults to 22; User Name defaults to root.
  • Authentication Type switches between Password and Private Key. With a key, pick one from your key list — if none exist yet, the form links straight to the key manager. Keys are shared across servers, so switching machines later is one tap.

SSH or Mosh

Terminal Type picks the protocol for terminal sessions on this server:

  • SSH works everywhere and is the default.
  • Mosh survives network changes, roaming and sleep — the session reappears instead of hanging. It needs the server to run mosh-server, which NeoServer starts for you over SSH. Two extra fields appear:
    • Command overrides the exact command used to start mosh-server. Leave it empty for the default. A custom command runs verbatim, so include the flags you need.
    • UDP Port pins the Mosh UDP port or range, for example 60000 or 60000:61000. Leave it empty to let the server choose. This field is ignored while a custom command is set — the command owns the port in that case.

Advanced options

  • SSH Agent Forwarding (SSH only) lets programs on the server use the keys loaded on your device for further SSH hops — clone from the server via your GitHub key, for example, without copying the key onto the server. Off by default.
  • WOL MAC stores the machine’s MAC address so NeoServer can send a Wake-on-LAN magic packet to power it on. Format: 02:a2:2a:aa:bb:5b.
  • SFTP Default DIR sets the directory the file browser opens first — useful to jump straight to /var/www. Defaults to /.
  • Enable Metrics (on by default) collects CPU, memory, disk, network and process metrics for the monitoring dashboard. Turn it off for servers you only use as tunnels.
  • Enable Container (on by default) adds the server to the container manager; Container Type selects Docker or Podman.
  • Bastion Server routes this connection through another saved server first — the classic jump-host setup. The bastion uses its own credentials; the target uses this form’s. Requires NeoServer Premium.
  • Socks5 Proxy tunnels the connection through a SOCKS5 proxy defined in Settings → Socks5 Proxy List (username and password supported). Requires NeoServer Premium. Note: while failover targets are configured, the proxy is skipped and the connection goes direct.

Failover

The Failover section adds a backup target that is tried automatically when the primary host is unreachable:

  • Host and Port point at the backup address.
  • Bastion Server optionally routes the backup attempt through a jump host.

The backup inherits this server’s credentials, so it is meant for the same machine reached another way — another LAN IP, a VPN address or a fallback domain. Leave the backup host empty and set only a bastion to retry the primary host and port through that bastion.

Startup Script

The Startup Script box holds shell code run in the session right after it connects — environment variables, aliases, a cd into your project. It runs exactly as entered, once per terminal session on this server.

Batch add and groups

Batch Add creates many servers from a text block, one per line, in the format name, username, host, port. Authentication and the advanced options apply to the whole batch, so a fleet of similar machines takes one paste. Servers can also be organized into groups for the sidebar and the AI chat’s target picker.
