Open and Edit Binary Plist Files on iPhone with Fileso

View an Apple binary property list as editable text in Fileso, then save it back in binary format. Binary encoding is not encryption.

1 min read

A binary property list, often called a bplist, stores structured Apple app data in a compact format. Binary does not mean encrypted. Fileso can decode a supported binary plist to readable XML text in its editor and serialize valid edits back to binary when you save.

Open and edit a bplist

  1. Make a copy before editing a configuration file. A malformed value can stop the app that uses it from reading its settings.
  2. Open the file in Fileso’s text editor. For a recognized binary plist, Fileso presents decoded text rather than raw bytes.
  3. Edit the values you understand. Keep the XML structure and value types valid.
  4. Save the file, then reopen it to check that it can still be decoded.

Fileso’s editor writes the edited property list back to the file in binary format. This workflow does not provide a JSON export or decrypt a genuinely encrypted file.

Why might a file fail to open?

A damaged plist, unsupported structure or encrypted file cannot be fixed by treating it as ordinary binary plist data. Verify the file type and keep the original copy for recovery.
