Fileso can extract the contents of a Chrome .crx extension package on iPhone or iPad. It recognizes CRX version 2 and 3 headers, removes the package header and unpacks the archive inside. You can then inspect files such as manifest.json, scripts and images. Extracting a CRX does not install the extension in an iOS browser.
Inspect a CRX package
- Save the CRX file to a location Fileso can access.
- Open or extract it with Fileso’s archive controls.
- Browse the extracted files and start with
manifest.jsonto understand the extension’s declared behavior. - Open individual text files or images as needed. Keep the original CRX if you may need to compare it with the extracted copy.
If extraction fails, the file may be damaged, use an unsupported CRX version or merely have a .crx extension without a valid CRX header. Renaming a random archive does not make it a valid Chrome extension package.
Can you run the extension on iPhone?
No. This workflow is for inspecting its packaged resources. To test how a Chrome extension behaves, use a compatible desktop browser and follow that browser’s extension installation process. Be cautious with untrusted scripts even when you are only reviewing the package.
